ISO 14971 provides a risk management framework for manufacturers to predict the probability of occurrence of risks and their consequences (Teferra, 2017).
This standard defines the best practices throughout the entire life cycle from design to distribution and maintenance. ISO 14971:2019 is a risk management standard but it’s not just about risk reduction. Increasingly regulators want to know more about the benefits your medical device offers. ISO 14971:2019 defines benefits in a way ISO 14971:2007 and EN ISO 14971:2012 did not. The ISO 14971 Standard indicates in Annex D4 that the acceptability of risk is not specified by the Standard and must be determined by the manufacturer.
